What is actually being tested

Interviewers assess whether you can communicate in the language of instruction, whether your academic motivation is real, and whether you have a clear sense of what you will do after graduation. They are not testing academic-level vocabulary, and they are not looking for recitation.

The advice from published accounts is to practise answering in plain, confident sentences rather than memorised complex constructions, because memorised language tends to fall apart the moment a follow-up question arrives.

The three questions that decide it

First, why China — and the answer needs to go beyond cost savings. It should reference something specific about the field or the institution: a research group, a programme structure, an industry the country leads in. Second, why this university and this programme, with specific detail; generic answers are described in published guidance as an immediate red flag. Third, what you will do afterwards.

A fourth question appears in technical interviews: at one top-tier university, applicants have been asked to solve mathematics problems live rather than to discuss mathematics in the abstract. Prepare to demonstrate rather than describe.

Preparation that shows up in the outcome

Know the specific programme details of the university you are interviewing with: module names, the department's research focus, the language the examinations are delivered in. Prepare an honest, confident account of any weak point in the file — a GPA, a gap year, a year of failed applications — rather than hoping it will not come up.

Take the technical setup seriously. Test your internet connection, camera and microphone before a Zoom or WeChat interview, use a quiet room with a plain background, and have your documents in front of you. Published accounts list connection and equipment problems as a real cause of poor interview performance, which makes this the cheapest improvement available.

After the interview

Expect multiple recommendation and document-request rounds rather than a single decision. Where a route closes, pivot immediately to another open route in the same cycle instead of waiting for the next year.

And keep the file alive after admission: the scholarship is normally renewed annually against performance criteria covering credits, marks, attendance and, for research students, the supervisor's evaluation. The interview is the beginning of a relationship the university will keep reviewing.
