The document errors

Inconsistent name spellings across the passport, degree certificate and application forms are listed as a leading cause of rejection. Chinese systems match identity fields literally, so a middle name present on one document and absent on another, or a transliteration that differs by a letter, can invalidate the routing of an application.

Ignoring document validity windows is the second. The police clearance certificate is typically valid for about six months, and the Foreigner Physical Examination Form also has a validity period. Applicants who obtain these in month 3 and submit in month 9 can find themselves with an expired file.

Format and naming errors are the third. Published guidance is specific: convert certificates, internship verification and awards to PDF, and name each file exactly as the portal instruction specifies — an upload requested as "passport page" should be named "passport page". Files submitted in the final days of a deadline window are statistically more likely to contain exactly this kind of fault.

The strategy errors

Applying only to elite campuses without safer options is described in published guidance as a structural mistake, and it is confirmed by the successful accounts on this site: nearly all of them include at least one university whose typical admitted profile matches the applicant's own record.

Waiting for one outcome instead of running parallel routes is the second strategy error. A rejection is not always a judgement on the profile; quota pressure is common, especially on the embassy route, and a Type B scheme may close while a provincial scheme in the same cycle remains open.

Assuming that a university nomination guarantees the final CSC allocation is the third. Nomination and allocation are separate steps governed by CSC and university rules.

The content errors

Generic study plans that do not match the department's direction are a recurring cause of rejection, alongside recommendation letters that read as templates. A specific, detailed letter from a professor who can describe real classroom performance carries noticeably more weight than a generic one, particularly at postgraduate level.

Two further mistakes are worth naming because they are easy to fix: not proofreading anything, and not asking anyone to read the application before submission. The accounts that succeeded almost always mention a second reader — an alumnus, a professor, or a senior who had been through the process.

If something goes wrong

An application returned by the portal is usually a correctable problem rather than a rejection: reviewers typically indicate which field needs fixing, and the applicant can revise and resubmit. One published account describes exactly this happening over an incorrectly completed field.

Reapplying is normal and often successful. Many applicants who now hold scholarships were rejected on their first attempt, and a stronger language certificate, a better CSCA result or a more targeted university list significantly improves the odds on a second attempt.
