Type A or Type B — the decision she had to make first

Before applying, Lim was confused about the difference between the Type A and Type B Chinese Government Scholarships and unclear why the process seemed to require two separate applications. Working through it, she established that the university application usually comes first, because it is what produces the pre-admission notice that the scholarship review needs.

She chose Type B, which allows direct application to universities, over Type A, which runs through the Chinese embassy or consulate and requires a national recommendation.

Reading the eligibility rules properly

Two filters shaped her list. The first was whether a scheme covered her nationality: as a Malaysian applicant she had to choose scholarships that include Malaysia, and she was not eligible for the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. The second was competitiveness.

She had already tested this during her undergraduate years, when an application for a provincial scholarship at Sun Yat-sen University failed. The award — roughly CNY 10,000 a year to international undergraduates — was assessed against candidates from the same major and the same year, which meant an unusually homogeneous and strong pool. Her conclusion is that competition varies far more between schemes than applicants expect, and that a scheme's headline value says little about your chances.

Timing, documents and the study plan

She began preparing her postgraduate application in mid-November and submitted in early February. The single most time-consuming item was the police clearance certificate: because she had already studied in China for her undergraduate degree, she obtained it in China rather than Malaysia to shorten the process — and she warns that applicants applying from Malaysia for the first time, especially high school students, need to allow real time for this step.

Because she was applying for a postgraduate scholarship she had to contact potential supervisors in advance and secure their pre-admission consent before applying, which she identifies as a step that needs to start early.

On the study plan, her advice is to be honest about your own profile: if your academic record is strong, lead with it; if it is not, lead with extracurricular activity and internships. On recommendation letters she contacted her professors first to confirm they were willing, then drafted the letters herself and had them signed.

On submission mechanics she is specific: convert certificates and internship verification to PDF, name every file exactly as the portal instruction specifies (a "passport page" upload should be named "passport page"), and expect the system to return the application with a note about what needs correcting if something is wrong. Her application was once returned for an incorrect field.

After the award

The CSC covers her tuition of CNY 25,000 a year and medical insurance of CNY 800 a year in full, plus a monthly stipend of CNY 3,000 — or a CNY 700 monthly subsidy if she lives off campus. Funding runs for the whole programme, but it is renewed annually against performance: passing every course examination is the condition, and failing to do so puts the funding at risk.

Her summary advice to other applicants is to be patient, expect setbacks, and keep building the profile: internships, extracurricular activity and consistent academic performance all feed into the annual review as well as the original decision.
