Overview

Jilin University in Changchun is one of China's largest universities, formed by the 2000 merger of five institutions. It is the country's leading centre for automotive engineering, and also strong in chemistry, law and geology.

JLU's automotive engineering programme was created with support from the First Automobile Works (FAW), China's first carmaker, which is headquartered in Changchun — giving students unusual access to China's automotive industry.

History

JLU was founded in 1946 in Harbin as the Northeast Administrative College, then moved to Changchun in 1946 and became a comprehensive university in 1958. It was a national key university from the outset of the 1959 designation.

In 2000 JLU merged with Jilin University of Technology, Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, Changchun University of Science and Technology and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications. The medical school is named after Norman Bethune, the Canadian physician who served in China.

JLU is a Project 985 and Double First Class university, and its six campuses make it one of the largest universities in China by physical area and enrolment.
