Overview

HIT is China's principal aerospace and defence engineering university. It builds and operates satellites, develops robotics for space and industry, and is the single largest source of engineers for the Chinese space programme.

It runs three campuses — Harbin, Weihai on the Shandong coast, and Shenzhen — the last of which is now the most competitive engineering campus in southern China.

History

HIT was founded in 1920 as the Harbin Sino-Russian Industrial School, teaching railway engineering to support the Chinese Eastern Railway. It became a full polytechnic in 1938 and a national key university in 1954 — one of only six designated at the time.

HIT is a founding member of the C9 League, joined Project 211 and Project 985, and remains under the direct administration of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Its research is closely tied to China's space, defence and advanced manufacturing programmes.

The Weihai campus opened in 1985 and the Shenzhen campus in 2002 on the former Shenzhen University Town site, giving HIT a presence in south China's electronics industry cluster.
