Visión general

Sun Yat-sen University is the leading comprehensive university in southern China and the academic anchor of the Greater Bay Area. It has an enormous footprint: five campuses across Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, 59,000 students and 10 affiliated hospitals.

Its medical school is one of the best in China, and its business school, School of Public Health and School of Life Sciences are all nationally ranked. SYSU is also the most popular destination for international students from Southeast Asia and the Belt and Road region.

Historia

SYSU was founded in 1924 by Sun Yat-sen himself as National Guangdong University, with the explicit aim of training modern professionals for a modern China. It was renamed in his honour in 1926.

After 1949 the university was reorganised and its engineering schools were separated out. In 2001 it merged with Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, creating a comprehensive university with medicine at its centre — the source of its current clinical reputation.

SYSU joined Project 985 and Project 211 and is part of Double First Class. Since 2015 it has built the Zhuhai and Shenzhen campuses, and the Shenzhen campus in Guangming district now hosts engineering, medicine and materials schools with a strong international recruitment drive.
