Fully funded master's and PhD places in China: the realistic path

Most international doctoral students in China are funded. Here is how the funding actually works and what supervisors expect.

Quick answer

How funding is structured

There are four main sources. CSC scholarships (Type A embassy and Type B university routes) pay a stipend of CNY 3,000 for master's and CNY 3,500 for doctoral students plus tuition and accommodation. University and provincial scholarships do similar. Supervisor research grants frequently add a top-up of CNY 1,000–3,000 per month for doctoral students working on funded projects. And Chinese Academy of Sciences institutes, which are not universities but admit students, have their own generous funding.

In practice, a funded doctoral student in a well-resourced laboratory in engineering or science can receive more in total than a CSC stipend alone suggests.

Getting a supervisor to say yes

Contact supervisors 8–12 months before the application deadline. Write a short, specific email: state your degree and institution, name their two or three most relevant recent papers, propose a concrete research question you would like to work on, attach a one-page CV and transcripts, and ask whether they have funded places for the coming intake.

Generic mass emails are deleted. Supervisors respond to applicants who have clearly read their work and who propose something feasible with the equipment they actually have.

The research proposal

Chinese doctoral applications require a research proposal, typically 1,500–3,000 words. It should state the problem, the gap in the literature, your methodology, the expected contribution and a realistic timeline. Committees read for feasibility as much as ambition.

If you have publications, list them with DOIs. Co-authored work is fine; describe your specific contribution.

Timing

The cycle runs: September to December, contact supervisors; December to March, submit university applications and CSC Type B; November to February, CSC Type A via your embassy where applicable; March to July, results; September, enrolment. Starting in September for the following September is not too early.

Tuition, deadlines and stipend figures are revised each cycle. Always confirm the current position with the university's international student office and on the official portal at campuschina.org before you apply.
