XMU was founded with money from Tan Kah Kee, an overseas Chinese industrialist, and retains an unusually strong connection to Southeast Asia — which is reflected in its large Malaysian, Indonesian and Thai student populations.
Historia
XMU was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, the Singapore-based rubber magnate and philanthropist, as the first university established by an overseas Chinese. He funded it personally through the Great Depression.
It was the first Chinese university to establish a School of Economics and a School of Journalism, and its Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, founded in 1956, was China's first dedicated area-studies institute for the region.
XMU joined Project 211 and Project 985 and is part of Double First Class. It established China's first overseas campus, Xiamen University Malaysia, in 2013, and in 2021 celebrated its centenary.

Xiamen University employs around 3,800 academic staff, including about 22 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. 22 national academy members. The Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics teaches in English and attracts international graduate students and faculty.
